While using mouthwash is not recommended as an alternative to brushing and flossing regularly, using mouthwash can definitely aid in helping you keep your teeth and gums healthy. There are a lot of different types of mouthwash available that treat different aspects of your smile. Here’s a list of some of the most common types and some of our favorites in each category.
Fluoride
Most cities have a water fluoridation system in place, meaning that if you drink a lot of tap water, you’re already getting fluoride. If you don’t then having a mouthwash with an additional fluoride rinse can help protect your teeth, especially if you’re prone to cavities. Our favorites in this category include ACT Total Care Rinse and Listerine Fluoride Defense.
Antiseptic
Listerine’s original antiseptic formula is still one of the best rated. Although it’s known for being a bit strong due to its alcohol content, the longtime favorite is one of the best for fighting gum disease. It also knocks out bad breath after a particularly fragrant dinner, although flossing is still the best defense against that.
Whitening
Rembrandt has developed at-home whitening products since 1989. This is our favorite because it contains both hydrogen peroxide for whitening as well as fluoride to help strengthen your tooth enamel.
Sensitive Teeth
The majority of sensitive teeth cases are a result of tooth enamel erosion. This is caused by acids in the mouth, either from bacteria on the teeth that produce them or foods and drinks that are highly acidic. That’s why the best sensitive teeth mouthwashes have fluoride to help strengthen teeth as well as a higher pH (meaning less acidic). Act Restoring Anticavity mouthwash has a pH of 6.6, making it higher than many of its fluoridated competitors.
Using a mouthwash can add a boost to your dental care. When you choose a mouthwash, make sure that it bears the seal from the ADA. Also, it is still vitally important to brush and floss every day and see your dentist regularly to help ensure cavity and gum disease prevention.
