American flagsOnce known as Armistice Day, commemorating the end of World War I, Veteran’s Day has been observed to honor U.S. military veterans since 1919. On November 11th 1918, the Allies of World War I signed an armistice with Germany that took effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month that ended the hostilities on the Western Front. Several countries observed the holiday, which has become known as Remembrance Day to the majority of member countries in the Commonwealth of nations. The United States originally observed Armistice Day, which evolved when, in 1954, President Eisenhower signed the bill into law that made the day a federally-observed holiday, and a congressional amendment to the bill officially changed the name to Veteran’s Day.
Although the official observance of Veteran’s Day is on November 11th, the town of Gilbert will be celebrating its patriotism and honoring veterans on Thursday, November 5th. This year, the town of Gilbert’s Veteran’s Day ceremony will take place starting at 11 a.m. at Gilbert’s Civic Center Campus when the Williams Field High School Band will perform patriotic music before and during the presentation of colors. Afterwards, the key note speech will be delivered by Captain Philip Roos. After immigrating to the United States in 1974. he became a U.S. citizen in 1978 and enlisted in the United States Navy in 1982 after graduating from Prescott High School.
Celebrate your patriotism by honoring our veterans a little early this year. This event is free and open to the public and veterans and their families are encouraged to attend. Parking for the event will be available at the Civic Center campus located at 50 E. Civic Center drive. On top of the scheduled ceremonies, attendees will be provided with free food and beverages, thanks to the generous support of local Gilbert restaurants and event sponsors.
