Looking to get out and enjoy the desert terrain before the summer heat sets in? Here are some of our favorite places to get out and get some fresh air.
South Mountain
At more than 16,000 acres, South Mountain Park is the world’s largest city park. It’s home to 51 miles of trails for horseback riding, hiking and mountain biking for all ability levels. From the park’s main entrance, you can drive up the Summit Road to Dobbins Lookout and take in spectacular valleywide views or you can continue to the Gila Lookout for a view of the Gila River Valley.
There are several scenic walking/hiking trails to choose from in this vast expanse, and the ancient Hohokam Indians and possibly prehistoric peoples before them carved petroglyphs into rocks almost everywhere you look.
Papago Park
Located very close to the Phoenix Zoo, Papago Park features four easy trails and unmatched views of the Tempe area. The desert trails are generally smooth, easy treks with very little elevation gains, making it great for families.
The red sandstone geological formations of Papago Park were formed some 6-15 million years ago. One such formation, Hole-in-the-Rock, is a major landmark, thanks to the openings that eroded in the formation over time. There is evidence that the Hohokam used the openings to track the solstices. Be sure to make the hike at sunset; these buttes claim rights to the best sunset views in the Valley.
Desert Botanical Garden
Looking for a more artistic walk? Check out the Desert Botanical Garden. For more than 70 years, the Desert Botanical Garden has been teaching and inspiring visitors from the local community and around the world, providing research, exhibits and more designed to help us understand, protect and preserve the desert’s natural beauty. Today, the Garden features:
- 140 acres
- 55 acres under cultivation
- 50,000+ plant displays showcased in beautiful outdoor exhibits
- 1 of only 24 botanical gardens accredited by the American Alliance of Museums
As you pass through the Garden’s entrance, you will find yourself in Ottosen Entry Garden, where you can access many visitor amenities. From Ottosen Entry Garden you can begin your journey through the Garden on the Harriet K. Maxwell Desert Wildflower Loop Trail or the Desert Discovery Loop Trail.
